Student Teachers Igniting the Next Generation
Education FOR students BY students
Modeled after the Educational Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), S.T.I.N.G. is a one-day program of unique, unusual and inspiring classes taught BY high school students FOR middle school students on the campus of Granite Hills High School in El Cajon. (You can read more about the MIT programs at esp.mit.edu)
The goal is to use this unique teaching program to instill a love of learning and teaching in students and teachers alike.
Enthusiasm is contagious…
Student teachers are asked to develop a class around a topic that they themselves are passionate about. Credentialed teachers work with the student teachers to create meaningful materials to support the class curriculum. Student to student…
By sharing their knowledge and creativity in ways only other students can, both student teachers and students gain experience developing their own interests while inspiring younger students with a strong desire to learn.
The result is a unique, dynamic curriculum and an atmosphere of unparalleled energy.
Classes start at 9 a.m. and will run in 40 minute increments. There is a lunch period scheduled for 35 minutes mid-day. One class or ten…
A student can sign up for as few or as many classes as they’d like, but it’s important that the student choose classes that interest them, not something they are “supposed to learn.” There are academic and non-academic subjects to choose from – the goal is to instill a love of learning and teaching, not to study for the SAT. Making a difference…
S.T.I.N.G. started as a community service project of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Granite Hills High School by a handful of students who wanted to make a difference in the educational future of all students. Organized and run by the students, S.T.I.N.G. brings together the administrators, teachers and advisers of Granite Hills, school clubs, athletic teams, PTSA, and involves several school districts, local service clubs, and the East County Regional Chamber of Commerce, effectively creating an entire community dedicated to improving education in our schools from the inside out – Student Teachers Igniting the Next Generation! An unparalleled effort…
S.T.I.N.G. is the first public high school program of its kind and has been made possible with the generous energy and support of Learning Unlimited (LU; visit learningu.org). A non-profit organization of former chairpersons and members of the Educational Studies Program at MIT, Stanford and the University of Chicago, LU volunteered several mentors to assist with the planning and implementation of the first S.T.I.N.G, and without their help, this program might not have made it to reality. Consider making a donation to Learning Unlimited if you are in a position to do so. With Special Thanks to:

Mr. Daniel Zaharopol, CEO, Learning Unlimited, Inc.
T. Andy Keller, Founder
Mr. Matthew Davis, IB Coordinator and Team Manager, Granite Hills High School
